General Information

Highland Day Camp is for rising K-rising 5th grade campers. Our summer camp schedule is designed entirely around the idea that life-change happens most effectively within the context of relationships. Many camps utilize a “choose your own adventure” approach to activities scheduling for their campers, wherein campers choose activities based on their interests and have a unique schedule from their cabin mates for the week. We’ve taken a very different approach, believing and seeing that an amazing camp experience has very little to do with what you do, and everything to do with who you do it with.

Campers spend their week at Highland Day Camp entirely with their group. All activities are scheduled for them as a group, and the campers never know for certain what activity is coming up next. This lets kids be kids and not worry about the details of the week, but it also gives our summer staff an abundance of time with each camper. This is time that allows our staff to truly get to know each camper and be able to disciple them in the most effective and personal way possible.

With that said, we want every camper to leave camp at the end of every day telling stories of all the amazing activities they did! Our hope and prayer for all campers is that they leave camp telling stories of all the challenges they tackled and of the fears that they overcame. Most importantly, we want campers telling stories about what they learned about the character of God through their counselors.

After you drop your camper off at 9:00, we’ll start the day with worship, a Bible story, and small group time.  The majority of the day is then filled with campers and their groups rotating through several activities.  Depending on the schedule, these include high ropes activities, low ropes and team-building challenges, Kiddie Pool Kickball, slip-n-slide, adventure races, field games, and more.  We finish the day with a final large group gathering before leaving to go home at 3:00. ,

Campers are grouped together based on gender and grade. We generally try to only group kids together who are within one grade level of each other. We also will do our best to honor your group/cabin mate requests. Each group has at least 2 counselors and a maximum of 10 kids.

Highland Day Camp is very much focused on outside activities, but we have a rain schedule in the event that weather prevents us from going outside.  The rain schedule rotates groups through various games, team building activities, and crafts. If it is just raining then we will still use the slip-n-slide. We will do our best to reschedule high rope activities so that your camper still gets to experience it all.

Since most of our activities are outside, campers will still go outside even on hot days, but groups can always take a break from the heat by coming inside and cooling off.  We have water coolers placed around camp, and we make sure that each camper has a water bottle and is carrying it with them at all times.  We also have extra water bottles in case a camper forgets to bring one from home.  Counselors make sure their campers are drinking their water throughout the day and wearing sunscreen and bug spray.  We also have water activities (Kiddie Pool Kickball and slip-n-slide) for kids to cool off.

Our counselors are carefully chosen high school and college-age students, who love the Lord and who are passionate about sharing His love and serving kids.  All counselors go through a written application and personal interview process. All counselors also undergo a background check. In general, boy campers will have male counselors, and girl campers will have female counselors. At times, younger boy groups (rising K-rising 2nd) may have a girl counselor, but they will always have at least one boy counselor.

Counselors go through a full week of training before summer camp starts. Training week covers everything from emergency procedures, technical safety knowledge, soft skills of counseling and camper care (such as making sure your campers are always wearing sunscreen & bug spray and drinking water throughout the day), sharing the gospel, and much more.  All counselors are CPR and first aid certified

  • Your camper’s Health Screening Form must be completed prior to arrival. (This can be found in your CampInTouch account.)

Please send your child with a lunch, drink, and water bottle, Monday through Friday. In the event there is another child at camp with a life-threatening allergy to a substance, for the safety of that child, we will ask you not to pack food containing that particular item. Thank you for  your understanding.

We do ask that you pack lunches that do not need to be microwaved.

  • Tie-dye Tuesday: tie-dye shirts
  • Wildlife Wednesday: t-shirts with animals
  • Theme Thursday: this will be announced later for your camper’s specific week. (Past examples have included Hawaiian, Western, Sports, Superhero, Disney, Holiday, or Neon Day.)

We understand that you’re entrusting to us the most important part of your lives, and we do all we can to ensure the health and safety of your children. We commit to you that we’ll be proactive in pursuing you in the event that something happens to your child to ensure you’re getting the information you need as a parent to make decisions about your child’s health. We do understand that you might not want to know about every bump or bruise, but if our nurse and/or camp director feels that the incident is significant, you will receive a phone call alerting you of the situation. Generally, if your child has to sit out of an activity for even a short period of time, and definitely if the injury/illness requires medical care beyond what our nurse can provide, you will be notified.

We have a nurse on our staff at our Overnight Camp full-time to handle any medical needs, who also acts as a consultant to our day camp location in the event of need. In addition, all of our staff at both camp locations are trained in first aid and CPR before the start of the summer.

Medical History

All campers are required to fill out a comprehensive health history form, located in your CampInTouch account, before arriving at camp. This form ensures that we have all the information we need to provide the best possible care for your child while at camp, as well as any information a doctor might need to assist your child in the event of an emergency. While it may take a few minutes to fill out, it is essential that we have a complete record of any medical concerns so we can provide the best possible care!

Allergies

Please let us know if there are any allergies or intolerances that you would like us to be aware of before your child arrives at camp. If your child has an allergy that is potentially anaphylactic, we do not generally have an epinephrine injectors on-hand so we ask that you send one with your camper. All of our staff are trained in the use of epinephrine injectors and we’ll work with you to decide who you’re most comfortable with carrying it.

In the event that a child is coming to day camp with a life-threatening allergy to, for example, peanuts, we do reserve the right to declare the week to be “peanut free” and will ask parents not to pack items with peanuts for the safety of that child. We will communicate these situations as soon as we become aware of them.

Medication

Medication will only be distributed under the specific instructions of the camper’s physician and with written permission from a legal parent/guardian. All medication, including over-the-counter meds, need to be given to the nurse (at overnight camp) or camp director (at day camp) upon arrival; for the safety of all of our campers and staff, we do not allow medication in the cabins or camper groups. The camp nurse will follow the distribution schedule in the camper’s medical history form and in the event that a camper needs medications at night (insulin injections, etc), we’ll work with you to determine the best plan for the week to ensure you’re comfortable with the arrangement.

If the cost of sending your child to camp is prohibitive to your child experiencing a week of camp, we have created a scholarship account specifically designed with you in mind. Through our Scholarship Program, parents can still send their children to Camp without breaking their wallets! No child should be turned away from Camp because their family cannot afford it. If you find the need for financial assistance then this scholarship is for you. Instructions to apply for financial assistance is below; please return all forms to information@camphighland2.wpengine.com before registering for camp.

Accessible through the “Parent Login” link above, your CampInTouch account gives you access to your information, your child’s information, secure online applications, as well as summer photos, news, and email. This also gives you the ability to update your information: addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, billing info, photos of your child and more. After your application has been processed you will be notified of your enrollment status and you will receive an enrollment confirmation email.

Please note that your registration includes a non-refundable deposit. If you cancel before Jan. 15th we will refund all but a $40 non-refundable deposit. If you cancel before May 15th we will only refund half of your tuition. All cancellations after May 15th will be non-refundable.

For campers with disciplinary problems, we do our best to coordinate with parents to help solve problems as early in the week as possible. We truly want every camper to be able to stay the whole week and will do our best to navigate any underlying circumstances that might be causing the problem. However, in the unlikely event that we are unable to resolve discipline issues with a camper, sometimes the only option is to ask a parent to come pick up their child early. In this case, no refunds will be offered.

We will not be offering Extended Care.

Financial Aid

It is our heart and desire that no child will ever be left out because of an inability to pay the full tuition cost of camp. We are committed to working with you to figure out a way to get your child to Camp Highland, even if you’re in a tight financial position and even if it takes some creativity on both of our parts to make it happen. So, we’ve put together the following as a means to communicate how we think about financial aid and some ideas that you can use to make sure your child joins us at camp this coming summer.

HOW DOES THE FINANCIAL AID PROCESS WORK?

First, you do not necessarily need to apply for financial aid before you apply for summer camp for your child. Deposits/tuition are charged only upon enrollment (not upon submission of the application) so if you’re applying for financial aid, simply make note of that in the application and we’ll handle your application accordingly.

Full and partial scholarships are awarded on an as-needed basis and determined on a sliding scale. Forms are below for download – they are reviewed within a couple days of when we received them and we’ll contact you back with a decision or any further questions that we might have.

We do ask everybody to make some investment towards the tuition, even if it’s small. Even in the tightest of situations, with a “full scholarship” towards day camp, we will generally ask parents to cover the $50 deposit.
